How Do You Get to Aso and the Crater Road?
This guide is for visitors who want to reach the Aso area in central Kyushu and the road up to Mount Aso's crater. It covers the routes that Kumamoto Prefecture publishes from Tokyo, the driving directions from the Aso Volcano Disaster Prevention Council, and the hours of the mountain road.
We used the official English pages of Kumamoto Prefecture's tourism site and of the Aso Volcano Disaster Prevention Council. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. The prefecture marks its access page as an archive page, so treat the times as rough guides and check current timetables.
Where Aso is
Kumamoto Prefecture says Aso lies in the middle of Kyushu, the southwesternmost of Japan's main islands. It says Aso is made up of 1 city, 3 towns and 3 villages. All of them are linked by their connection to Mount Aso.
The prefecture is known for the Aso caldera and the active volcano. Our guide to the caldera and the five peaks explains what that means.
The city of Aso and its neighbors
The city of Aso is one of the seven local governments in the Aso area. Its official site gives a population of 23,626 people, in 11,883 households, as of July 31, 2026. The city hall is in the Ichinomiya-machi district.
The same site has a section on Mount Aso and tourism. Its page on climbing Mount Aso is the one we use for crater rules in our guide to the crater's current status.
From Tokyo by air
The prefecture's archived access page lists these figures from Haneda Airport:
- About 1 hour 40 minutes by plane to Aso Kumamoto Airport.
- From the airport to Aso Station: about 1 hour 5 minutes by Trans-Kyushu bus, or about 1 hour 10 minutes on a service it calls "Yamabiko".
The page does not say whether "Yamabiko" is a bus or a train, so check this before you go.
From Tokyo by rail
The same page lists about 5 hours 40 minutes by Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Kumamoto Station. From Kumamoto Station, it lists about 2 hours to Aso Station by the Trans-Kyushu bus, or about 2 hours 5 minutes on the "Yamabiko" service.
The prefecture adds that all times are the shortest reference and change with the time of day. It asks visitors to check traffic and the websites of public transport operators in advance.
By car to the crater
The Aso Volcano Disaster Prevention Council gives driving directions to the mountain park road in two lines:
- From Kumamoto: about 80 minutes from the Kumamoto exit. Take the Asotozan road, called "Bochusen", from the Aso Station intersection on Route 57. You can also take the Yoshida Line via Route 325.
- From Oita: about two hours from Oita City and Beppu. Take the Asotozan road, and turn left at the Asoekimae intersection on National Highway 57.
Hours of the mountain park road
The council publishes hours for the park road that leads to the crater area. It says the hours may change with conditions at the crater, such as how much gas is coming out.
- March 20 to October 31: 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The road closes at 6:00 PM.
- November 1 to November 30: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. It closes at 5:30 PM.
- December 1 to March 19: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. It closes at 5:00 PM.
The council says hours are extended during Golden Week and the New Year holidays. These hours cover the park road only. On the day we read the pages (2026-10-04), the crater itself was closed to visitors. Read our guide on whether you can visit the Aso crater now before you plan a trip up the mountain.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Fares and timetables for the buses, trains and flights above, and whether the "Yamabiko" service runs today.
- Rail routes from Osaka, Nagoya and Hiroshima, which the prefecture's page shows only in tabs we could not read.
- Any road closures on Route 57 or the Asotozan road right now.
- Parking fees near the crater.
